In 1995, Smokey Mountain was closed, though a new site was opened just a mile away, know at the time as Pier 18. The residents were moved into “temporary” housing in shanty houses they named “Happyland” (displaying quite an impressive sense of humor, I reckon). In 2001, a fire destroyed the entire “residential” area and most of the people moved inside the dumpsite.
